Activated charcoal tablets are widely used to adsorb toxins in cases of poisoning or drug overdose. When taken orally, activated charcoal works by binding to certain substances in the stomach and intestines, preventing their absorption into the bloodstream.

In CKD, the kidneys are less able to remove waste products from the blood, leading to the accumulation of toxins, commonly referred to as uremic toxins. These toxins can contribute to various symptoms and complications of kidney disease. Activated charcoal can bind to these toxins in the gut, potentially reducing their absorption into the blood and aiding in their excretion via the feces.
